◎ Character's Canon: Dragon Ball Z (Anime, without GT, and Xenoverse)
◎ Character's Age: 19
◎ Canon Point: Post-Xenoverse DLC (Which encompasses Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F')
◎ Background/History: Dragon Ball wiki!
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? He can detect ki signatures, like everyone else in his canon, but nothing else.
◎ Personality:
Living on Earth in my time is like... living in a nightmare. Always... running, and hiding, and looking for a way out.
While the Trunks of the main timeline was raised in peace by two loving (if a little... insane, in both cases) parents, Future Trunks had no such luxury. In the world of the future, the population was decimated, and the Earth was under the thumb of the Androids. Trunks was raised in a trial by fire, a world gripped by fear, and quickly had to adapt.
Because of his upbringing, and the world he was raised in, Trunks' foremost thought at all times is that of protecting others, and whatever world he may be in. He never met his father, but he heard stories of the great Z-Fighters protecting the world- these heroes became his idols, and Trunks tried his best to match up to them. As such, he's always on guard and prepared for a fight, never knowing what danger may arise and never letting himself go slack; much like the other Saiyans, he constantly trains, though in his case this isn't just to get stronger for pride or for fun- he has to be ready, at any time, to protect everyone. No matter what place he's in, this is his absolute foremost duty, is that of protecting those weaker than himself, and those who cannot fight.
If they set that Android free, it will be the end of all of us! NOOOOOOOO!
Also thanks to the world he was raised in, Trunks can be a bit overly cautious. While he clearly enjoys spending time around his family and friends in the past, he has a bad habit of letting his fears over what might happen if something goes wrong take control of him- though he usually thinks through his actions in a very tactical manner, the emotion of Gohan dying thanks to his inaction grips him in times like this, and he sort of just attacks without thinking, or uses abilities that may be less useful. This is again seen when fighting Cell, when he uses a form that limits his own speed in favor of brute strength- his desire to kill the Android and save the world overrides his own knowledge that the form may be detrimental.
And even though I still wouldn't be able to bring back all those already gone, I might be able to save the people who are left.
Trunks's desire to save the future, and the past, and everyone, is not entirely based in heroics. The future Trunks lived in was very lonely- his best friend had lost his entire family, his mother had lost his father, and Trunks himself had almost no one but the two of them. While he knows that no level of heroics will ever bring them back, he's incredibly dedicated to ensuring that no world will ever suffer the same fate as his- even though he knows that defeating Cell in the past will not change his own doomed timeline, he still fights and dies for the cause, wanting to ensure that no other world suffers.
Eventually, after joining the Time Patrol, this cause develops into protecting all of Time. He refuses to give up in protecting the timeline, even when the odds are stacked firmly against him, and he never backs down against forces that he can't even comprehend- he's a guardian, through and through, even when odds are bleak. He's stared down the bleakest odds possible and come out on the other side- he will never, ever stand down, against even the strongest foe, even against his father when need be, because he's dedicated to protecting everyone he can.
And now everything's going wrong!
When not faced with active duty, Trunks is... a bit awkward, really. Having been raised with so few people his social graces are not exactly on par- he tries to act cool and collected, especially around his father, but he has a habit of getting a little hero-worshippy around people he's heard about in the past. He's also incredibly easily flustered, pretty much incapable of dealing with the Supreme Kai of Time's shenanigans even after how long they've spent together, and is just really nervous in normal conversation- while all Saiyans are adapted primarily to fighting, Trunks really didn't know anything else for a long time, and doesn't exactly adjust easily to normal hanging out with people. Lots and lots of huffing and embarrassment ensues.
So much for your theory. You should know that a weapon doesn't make the man.
Despite his sense of duty, Trunks, like all Saiyans, enjoys combat. When faced with a struggle he can't quite match, though he may worry about what happens, he can't help but enjoy the challenge- fighting is in his blood, and getting stronger is just part of what makes up his life. He enjoys taking on stronger foes, and watching his Time Patrollers become stronger than him gives him a measure of pride, as well as letting him develop a rivalry with someone- even as their boss, he has no objection to sparring with them, enjoying himself whenever he can fight with nothing at stake.
In battle, Trunks tends to be more tactical, like his father. While his youth brings him mistakes- using a slow form against Cell as mentioned previously, for example- he usually plans out his attacks in advance, using his vast knowledge of combat techniques to use whatever makes the most sense at the time, whether it be swordsmanship, sheer brute force, or a gigantic ball of flame.
Believe what you want to.
For his young age, Trunks is a strong, wise, powerful young man, capable and ready to look beyond himself and fight for whatever cause is right and needs protecting. Though he may not always have the right idea when it comes to reaction, his heart is always in the right place, and he is firmly dedicated to protecting the Earth, and his family, and whoever may need him.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
Though Trunks' power has never been shown to its fullest extent, and we don't know exactly what level of training he went through in the future or between the Android Saga and Xenoverse, Future Trunks has easily dealt with foes that have given the majority of other characters trouble- it can be reasonably assumed that, barring perhaps Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan, Future Trunks is one of the most powerful characters in the Dragon Ball universe.
As a half-Saiyan, Trunks gets the best of both worlds- the dilution of Saiyan blood does not seem to reduce the power of the alien race at all, and in fact the half-Saiyans shown tend to more easily gain the levels of power that took their full-blooded counterparts many years to attain. They may lack some of the direct traits that Saiyans have, but they are still incredibly powerful in their own right, and Trunks possesses many abilities thanks to his rigorous training and his ancestry:
-Ki-based flight, though everyone seems to have that
-Ridiculous physical strength- like, seriously ridiculous. Though Trunks never grew up on Planet Vegeta and was therefore never faced with the extreme gravity, his strength doesn't seem to have suffered much, and there's basically no physical objects that seem to be able to cause any Saiyan or half-Saiyan difficulty in lifting or blocking.
-Zenkai- when a Saiyan is mortally wounded, but manages to recover, they gain a massive boost in their natural power, known as Zenkai. There does not seem to be a limit on how often this can be applied, but presumably it would be less important as natural power levels grow higher on their own, and it is also confirmed it will never take effect from self-inflicted wounds.
-Healing- While not capable of actual, like, healing, Saiyans physically recover from damage and the like much quicker than humans.
-Stamina- Saiyans can withstand... massive amounts of trauma, and physical pressure, and so on. Gravity seems to cause them no particular problem, regardless of how high it gets, and the massive amount of explosions the series contains just sort of knock them around a bit. Stab wounds seem to be a little more dangerous, and they are possible to overpower, but they're quite a bit sturdier than the average person. (Though everyone in Dragon Ball is- this may have something to do with training, as well.)
-Speed- Trunks is very, very fast. Even compared to a lot of other Saiyans, Trunks tends to use a very movement-based combat style, which results in him moving unbelievably quickly- most battles in Dragon Ball take place at more than supersonic speeds, which the normal human eye cannot keep up with. This also applies to reflex, allowing Saiyans to react to things with incredible agility.
-Ki manipulation- So, here's the part where Dragon Ball gets... well, Dragon Bally. Shaping ki energy- basically one's own life energy- into energy blasts is a key component of most fighting styles in the Dragon Ball universe. His father Vegeta was very gifted in this type of ki manipulation and used it very heavily in his fighting, and Trunks is no different- despite having a sword and ungodly physical strength, Trunks primarily fights with energy blasts, which can take the form of sheer energy or in some cases of bursts of flame and heat, which seems to be his specialty. He can also imbue the sword itself with ki to enhance its power when attacking with it.
As ki is life energy, every living being has it, and Trunks is capable of sensing it to locate certain individuals or detect when someone strong is nearby, as well as hiding his own ki.
-Transformation- Saiyans have two types of transformation. The first, that into a Great Ape, requires a tail- Trunks' tail was presumably removed shortly after his birth, as he is never shown to have it, so that is irrelevant.
The second type of transformation, that of the Super Saiyan, is considered rare enough to be a legend to most- Trunks is capable of achieving this form. Each level of Super Saiyan magnifies the user's abilities by an extreme amount over the previous, and Trunks is comfortable enough to slip in and out of these forms with little to no effort by this point.
Through various iterations of canon, Trunks has shown his mastery of every form up to Super Saiyan 3.
-Fusion- The Fusion Dance allows two people of similar power levels to fuse with each other, creating one gestalt being with all their abilities and a personality of its own for half an hour. Though Future Trunks has never been shown to use this, his alternate timeline child self has, and it can be assumed Trunks would be capable of it as well.
-Swordsmanship- It's- it's using a sword. Thanks to his enhanced speed and strength, he can use the sword at incredibly high levels of skill, but it's still just a sword. Nothing particularly special here.
In summary, and with a list of his power and abilities, you can describe Trunks as "holy hell Dragon Ball what are you". Though it's impossible to tell where he stands in strength with relation to Goku and Vegeta's newer strides in power in the movies, Trunks is definitely an obscenely strong fighter. Nerf away, he definitely needs it. Like, he could destroy a planet if he wanted to. Without struggle.

◎ Third-Person Sample:
Flying. Patrolling. Nothing but his sword on his back, a pocket full of Capsules, and his job to think about. Nothing like a routine to make you feel at home.
...But he wasn't at home, he mused, as he flew through the skies of this... weird, digital plane. Sure, it's not like he hadn't been a million other strange places- this one didn't feel that foreign after the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and Tokitoki City- but the situation was really different.
For one, his family was here. For two, other than his family, he didn't feel like there was anyone he could immediately trust.
He looked down on the city as he flew, at the faces going by. Sure, lots of strong people, but-- what if they were a threat too? He was used to trusting heroes instinctively, but in a world so foreign... He still had to protect it, like he always did. That's what he was, what he'd always be- when the world ended, when his father and Goku died, when Gohan died, he'd lost his choice. He was going to protect the world, time, whatever cause. This was no different.
...But it was different, this time. He was more surrounded by people than ever, people he knew, in some cases, but he was- alone. None of his Patrollers. No Goku, or Gohan, or Supreme Kai of Time, or anyone he'd relied on in the past. Sure, his father was here, he knew he could (probably) rely on his father in a moment of crisis- with Bulma around, there was little chance of Vegeta trying to show off his power or prove some point in favor of making himself look better rather than protecting everyone, he could trust Vegeta to do the right thing when it came down to it...
... But some things? Some things weren't different.
He paused in the air for a moment, shaking his head, and looked up. His hand instinctively reached to his sword, unsheathing it in an instant and pointing it at where he hoped an enemy would see in the distant abyss--
"I'm not going to let this world die too. Even if I have to take out every last one of you myself, this world- every world- is going to survive."
His sword, his Capsules, his family.
Alone or not, there were still important things to fight for. And that was all he needed.
The promise of the future.
